He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
2 Corinthians 1:4
I'm sure that the last thing you want to do is go to a funeral. And you can be sure that the same is true for the family. I guarantee that no one wants to be there. No one wants to see that tiny white casket. It's sad. It's hard. The very least that you can do is support the family by going to the funeral. Even if you barely know them. It's such an important event. Just show up!
Why-
We were actually worried that when we walked into the service, the church would be empty. We were worried that no one cared that our son died. We were worried that we would be alone. It was very, very comforting to see that the room was full. We needed that support. You make think that your presence is insignificant but you would be wrong. We were surprisingly aware of our surroundings. We knew everyone that was, and everyone that wasn't there that day. We were shocked by how many of our "close" friends & family didn't come to the one and only event our son will ever have. We were saddened that they didn't care enough to support us that day. On the other hand, we were so pleasantly surprised to see how many others that we didn't expect were there. People that we didn't know well. People that we hadn't seen in years. It really touched our heart. We felt lifted up. Family's need to feel like people care about them and their loss. Family's need to feel loved and touched in tangible ways. Especially on the day that they are burying their child. Showing up is the best way to do that.
